Wishing a very happy birthday to this gorgeous baby girl who turns 1 today! 1st birthday cake smash photoshoots can create some great memories and I thought it could be helpful to cover some common misconceptions. - The amount of sugar. Most babies have not eaten much cake before so they do not have a concept of what cake is yet. Especially so in a photo studio environment where they are not in their normal meal time situation. So they often end up eating a very small amount (often tentatively!). And are only next to the cake for a few minutes for the time it takes to do the photos. - If the baby doesn't eat much then why have a cake? The main use is as a photo prop. Cake is synonymous with birthdays and makes it clear it's a celebration in the photographs, capturing a special milestone. The cake gives the baby something to investigate and can help to keep them sitting in one place and stop them from crawling off the set as much. It's also a sensory experience for them and hopefully helps them to have fun. Afterwards any cake left over that is still intact can be taken home and eaten by other family members. The photoshoot is split into 3 parts. Starting with portrait photos without the cake, then photos with the cake, followed by baby bath tub splash photos which also helps wash off the cake!
