Last week I travelled to the 2017 Northern Portrait and Newborn Expo in Blackpool. This was a 2 day photography exhibition and training event and it had a great line up of training workshops and photography vendors all coming together under one roof.
I believe that investing in good training is invaluable and I have attended several newborn workshops over the years. I am always looking to perfect my skills as a photographer in order to produce beautiful images for my clients that will be displayed in their home for years to come.
I was excited to attend Rachel Vanoven’s newborn workshop as I have been following Rachel’s work for a while. Rachel is an American newborn photographer and is one of the best in the business, she estimated she has photographed around two thousand babies up to now so it was great to see her in action and the techniques she uses. We had two gorgeous babies modelling for us so we could see how Rachel runs her newborn sessions followed by a run-through on editing, and then question and answer.
These are a few images from the day of Rachel showing us how she works.
I also attended a workshop run by professional photographer and trainer Gary Hill. In this class we were learning different lighting techniques. Gary provided us with lots of useful information and we all got to take our own photographs with each lighting set up so we could see the final result.
In between classes I spent some time visiting all the stalls and stands from the vendors attending who were selling everything newborn photography related such as props and outfits. All in all I had a great couple of days at the show and I’m looking forward to putting my new knowledge into practice!
